In this lesson, we will cove the essentials for providing braille access to myMMX db. There are no settings required to configure braille accessibility within the program. However, a proper environment is essential for braille access. We will cover these essentials, as well as provide you with a complimentary quick overview of the JAWS screen reader so you can get started even if you are not familiar with how to use JAWS.
Braille access to myMMX db requires two essential components to make it work with your braille display. They are the JAWS screen reader and Java.
JAWS Scrren Reader
The JAWS screen reader provides a connection between your braille display and your computer. Any braille display that is compatible with JAWS should work. It is a powerful screen reader that runs on the Windows operating system platform and is provided by Freedom Scietific and is a separately purchased program which is not provided by myMMX db.
Once you have obtained JAWS and installed JAWS, you will then need to install a driver. The driver is a small program that tells JAWS to recognize your braille display. Any braille display that is compatible with JAWS will provide a driver. One exception is Freedom Scientific’s own braille displays, which do not require a driver.
You will need to consult your braille display manufacturer’s website to obtain this free driver and follow the instructions to install it. One important thing to remember, DO NOT plug in your braille display to your computer until AFTER the driver is installed!
Once JAWS and driver are installed, you should be able to instantly see elements of your Windows operating sytem on your braille display. If you do not, you may need to contact your display’s Support team for assistance.
After JAWS and myMMX db are installed, you will need to create a relationship between the two programs. There is a script that will do all that for you. Follow these steps:
- Open Windows File Explorer and go to C:]Program Files\nWise\mymmxdb
- Using arrow keys, scroll down until you see JawsScript_1.2.
- Right-click on this file or with JAWS, press Shift + F10 to right-click.
- From the menu that appears, select “Run as Administrator”
- You are done.
Java Runtine Environment:
myMMX db is a Java-based program and requires that Java be installed on your computer before running myMMX db. Please refer to our Installation Cheat Sheet for instructions on how to install Java.
If Java is installed, the Java Access Bridge must be enabled for each Windows user account that will be using myMMX db. Here are the steps:
- Press Windows key to open a ch box.
- Type control and press Enter
- The Windows Control Panel should appear.
- Press Tab key several times until you see Ease of Access. Then press Enter.
- Press Tab again several times until you see Use computer without a display. Press Enter.
- Press Tab key again until you see JAWS. If this option is not enabled, press space bar to enable.
- Press Tab again until you see Java Access Bridge. If this is not enabled, press space bar to enable.
- Press Tab one last time until you see OK. Press space bar to save your changes.
- You might need to restart your computer for the changes to take effect.
Verifying Everything Works:
If you have properly followed the steps for Java and JAWS, everything should work. On your braille display, you should see a login screen when you start myMMX db and after successfully logging in, the first message you will see is “Number to call”. If this is not the case, here are some things to verify.
- Is JAWS working properly? The eassiest way to tell is to see if you can access any other area of Windows and see it on your braille display. If you can see other parts of Windows, then the problem is likely Java related. If you cannot see any part of Windows, then you need to consult your braille display manufacturer for support.
- If you can see other Windows areas, but nothing in myMMX db, then make sure you have run the JawsScript_1.2 program. You can run this multiple times without harming your system.
- If you still cannot see myMMX db after running the script, then the problem is highly likely to be Java-related. There are two things to look for:
- Is Java Access Bridge enabled? This is a per Windows user account setting. If you have multiple users on your computer, then you need to enable the bridge for each user.
- If, after enabling the bridge, you still do not see myMMX db, press the Windows key and scroll to open the Java folder. Select a Java program. If you cannot see the contents of that Java program, then somehow, Java is broken on your computer.
- Make sure you did restart your computer. If still a problem, re-download and re-install Java.
The myMMX db environment
There are two environmental factors in myMMX db that can impact the braille experience. They are:
- The Window is not maximized: Almost any program that interacts with braille needs to be in maximzed mode. If not, the braille display will only show a few words at a time. To make sure your myMMX db is in maximized mode, press the Alt key to open the menu. Then use the down arrow key until you see “maximize”. Press the Enter key.
- Don’t Use Split-View: Split view is a screen layout that works well for people with low-vision. However, it separates out text and the braille user may not be able to read both sides of a convesation. To use single-view, follow these steps:
- In myMMX db, press F5 key to go to Settings.
- Press Shift + Tab to go to go to the Settings sections list.
- Press Right Arrow key to go to “Text” section.
- Press Tab key several times until you see “Single Window” and press space bar to enable this option.
- Close myMMX db by prssing Alt + F4. Then start myMMX db again.
JAWS Command Essentials:
While myMMX db requires using JAWS screen reader to interact with braille displays, you do not have to be an expert in using JAWS in order to use myMMX db. In fact, several users have learned basic esentials and started using myMMX db before learning how to master JAWS. However, we do encourage you to seek training to become skilled in using JAWS, as it will improve your overall Windows experience. Here is a complimentary list of keyboard commands to get you started.
- Logging into Windows: When you start your computer, press the Enter key until you see “Password”. Type in your Windows password and press Enter.
- Starting myMMX db (option 1): Press Windows key + D to minimize your desktop apps. Then press M until you see the myMMX db icon. Press Enter to start myMMX db.
- Starting myMMX db (option 2): Press the Windows key. This will open a search box. Type mymmxdb and press enter.
- Moving between fields or elements: Use Tab key to move down the fields and elements in myMMX db. Use Shift + Tab to move up the fields and elements.
- Activating a button: Press the space bar to activate a button.
- Verify which program is in focus: Press Insert + T to read the title bar of the program that is currently in focus.
- Bring running program into focus: Press Alt + Tab until you see the program you want to be in focus.
- Close myMMX db: While myMMX db is in focus, press Alt + F4.
- Toggle JAWS Audio on or off: Press Insert + Space Bar.
- Shut down Windows: Minimize your desktop by pressing Windows key + D. Then press Alt + F4. Then press Enter
myMMX db provides simple hot keys to quickly get you where you want to go. They are:
- F1: Go to home screen. You will see “Number to call.” Type n the phone number you want to call.
- F2: Go to the Contacts/Address Book
- F3: View your call history
- F4: View missed calls and messages left for you.
- F5: View Settings Menu
- F9: Hang up your call. To verify that you indeed are disconnected, press Tab key. You should see “Print…”. If you do not see Print, press F9 again to ensure you are actually disconnected.
